Mars rover finds first evidence of water: a river of it

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Thu Sep 27, 2012 5:37pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover, Curiosity, dispatched to learn if the most Earth-like planet in the solar system was suitable for microbial life, has found clear evidence its landing site was once awash in water, a key ingredient for life, scientists said Thursday.

Curiosity, a roving chemistry laboratory the size of a small car, touched down on August 6 inside a giant impact basin near the planet's equator. The primary target for the two-year mission is a three-mile (five-km) -high mound of layered rock rising from the floor of Gale Crater.

Scientists suspect the mound, known as Mount Sharp, is the remains of sediment that once completely filled the crater. Analysis of a slab of rock located between the crater's north rim and the base of Mount Sharp indicate a fast-moving stream of water once flowed there.

Images taken by Curiosity and released on Thursday show rounded stones cemented into the rock, which rises like a piece of jack-hammered sidewalk from the planet's surface.

The stones inside the rock are too big to have been moved by wind, Curiosity scientist Rebecca Williams, with the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, told reporters on a conference call.

"The consensus of the science team is that these are water-transported gravel in a vigorous stream," she said.

The rock is believed to be from the floor of an ancient stream which was once between ankle- and knee-deep.

The analysis is based on telephoto images taken by the rover, which is en route to a patch of land named Glenelg where three different types of rock intersect.

Scientists have not yet decided if the slab of rock warrants a chemical analysis, or if there are better targets for Curiosity to look for the building blocks of life and the minerals to preserve it.

"The question about habitability goes beyond the simple observation of water on Mars," said lead scientist John Grotzinger at the California Institute of Technology.

"Certainly flowing water is a place where microorganisms could have lived. This particular kind of rock may or may not be a good place to preserve those components that we associate with a habitable environment," he said.

The $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity mission is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the 1970s-era Viking probes.

(AP) ? New England coach Bill Belichick was confused about a decisive field goal he thought was off-target. Detroit's Jim Schwartz couldn't understand a 27-yard penalty walk-off for unnecessary roughness. Philadelphia's Andy Reid felt ignored while trying to decline a penalty.

The furor over the work of replacement officials reached something of a fevered pitch during Week 3 in the NFL, when even deciphering downs and distance became a challenge.

In Sunday night's Ravens-Patriots game, shoving matches followed even insignificant plays. One TV analyst called it the substitute-teacher syndrome: See how much you can get away with before the real thing returns.

Broncos coach John Fox was fined $30,000 Monday and defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio $25,000 for verbal abuse of the officials during a Monday night game against Atlanta on Sept. 17.

SHOW BITS: Stewart drops f-bomb; Party starts

Show Bits brings you the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards through the eyes of Associated Press journalists. Follow them on Twitter where available with the handles listed after each item.

___

JON STEWART DELIVERS AN F-BOMB

It wouldn't be an awards show without an f-bomb.

Actually, it would be, but an f-bomb always adds spice, even when bleeped.

The man who did the honors at Sunday night's Emmy show was Jon Stewart, excitedly accepting his 10th consecutive trophy for best variety series.

He began his acceptance speech by noting that "The Daily Show" deals in topical comedy, "which has the shelf life of egg salad." He added that the Emmy does indicate "The Daily Show" has some value.

In some future age, he went on to say, holding his Emmy aloft, aliens arriving on Earth "will find a box of these."

"And they will know how predictable these (bleeping) things are," he added.

___

WE'RE OUT OF HERE!

Tina Fey was the first celebrity out of her seat after "Modern Family" won the last Emmy of the night and Jimmy Kimmel threatened to continue the show for another hour.

The "30 Rock" star and several others bolted for the doors closest to the stage, the most direct route to the posh Governors Ball across the street at the LA Convention Center.

Those not invited to the lavish after party had to exit through the back doors.

There was an alternate third route, however, for the last winner of the night.

That's the one the "Modern Family" crew used, winding their way through the pressroom, past the backstage area and into an elevator that held most of them.

"I'm going to latch onto one 'Modern Family' person for the rest of the night," said the show's kid star, Nolan Gould, as he was the last to make it in.

___

'GAME CHANGE' FOR TOM HANKS

Tom Hanks shakes his hands, perhaps to get a good grip, as he prepares to select his take-home Emmy from the backstage trophy table.

"What do I do?" asks Hanks, who collected a trophy as one of the producers of "Game Change," honored as best miniseries or made-for-TV movie at Sunday's Emmys.

"Now what?" he asks after signing for the trophy. He's directed to a bank of ready photographers.

"Come on Rita, get in here!" A fellow "Game Change" producer shouts to Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, as flashbulbs pop.

___

QUICKQUOTE: JULIANNE MOORE

"Hurry up, hurry up! I need my Emmy." ? Emmy winning "Game Change" actress Julianne Moore, waiting in line behind Emmy winning "Game Change" director Jay Roach backstage at the Emmy trophy table.

___

AN EMMY KODAK MOMENT

It's Kodak Moment time backstage at the Emmys, with "The Daily Show" winners taking photos of each other holding their Emmys.

"Do they still ship these if you ask?" inquired the show's head honcho, Jon Stewart.

"Yeah, because I have two children with me," he added, noting the statuette's pointy wings.

But he borrowed a trophy so he could pose for a photo with his writing team. He promised to return it before leaving the theater.

___

'MANDY PATINKIN, HOLLA!'

Claire Danes came up with the catchphrase of the night when she saluted her "Homeland" co-star during her Emmy acceptance speech thusly: "Mandy Patinkin, holla."

Danes, taking the stage after winning best actress in a drama for the Showtime series, mentioned several names before matter-of-factly calling out Patinkin in the most unexpected way.

Twitter went nuts, with many people suggesting that this saying needs to become a meme, and soon.

As the pop-culture site (at)Gawker put it: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the new Angelina Jolie's leg." From New York Magazine's (at)Vulture site: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the best thank-you ever." And from NPR's (at)nprmonkeysee: "If the Internet doesn't remix 'Mandy Patinkin, holla' by tomorrow morning, it is a failure."

Others suggested that Jewish delis begin baking Mandy Patinkin challah. Still others made references to Patinkin's Broadway bona fides with "Evita" jokes.

If someone can figure out a way to incorporate Patinkin's famous line from "The Princess Bride" ? "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die" ? then the Internet might truly be worthwhile after all.

___

'HOMELAND' STAR JOKES ABOUT PLAYING HOUSE

Married actor Damian Lewis joked to reporters that he might be doing some extra celebrating with "Homeland" co-star Claire Danes, who is also married and came to the Emmys with a baby bump.

"We're going away to a romantic island together," the red-headed British actor joked. "When that baby is ginger you guys are going to have a field day."

The comment may have gotten some members of the press too excited, one of whom asked Danes a few moments later how she viewed the win in light of giving birth.

"Thank god I am not giving birth," said Danes, who's in an earlier stage of pregnancy.

The pair reunited later in another backstage area, looking very platonic and like two friends enjoying each other's success.

___

KIMMEL EVENS THE SCORE

Don't ever cross Jimmy Kimmel.

The Emmy host warmly introduced his parents, who were seated in the audience, and told viewers they had always been supportive of their son.

"They always told me I could do anything I set my mind to," he said, "and this year I set my mind to winning the Emmy.

"And guess what? I didn't," he went on. "You told me I could, and I didn't, and I'm devastated. You lied to me!"

Egged on by Tracy Morgan, who was seated beside them and stated, "I don't trust them," Kimmel summoned security to remove Mom and Dad from the auditorium.

"It's OK if you Taser them if you need to," he told the security men.

? Frazier Moore ?Twitter http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

___

DANES PROUD OF OBAMA BEING A FAN

Claire Danes loves that President Barack Obama is a fan of her show "Homeland."

"No pressure," the actress said backstage after her win for lead actress in a drama series at Sunday's Emmy Awards. "It's way cool that he is a fan. It speaks to the relevancy of the show and it's hugely validating.

Obama has said the Showtime series about a Marine returning home after being held as a POW, and who is now suspected by a CIA agent as working for al Qaeda, is his favorite.

___

JIMMY KIMMEL AT TWO-THIRDS MARK

As he neared the two-thirds mark of his Emmy hosting marathon, Jimmy Kimmel hadn't broken a sweat. Nor had he broken any records for laughter or hosting finesse.

Perhaps his most notable achievement was a prank: Inviting "30 Rock" star Tracy Morgan to lie on the stage, then asking viewers to post on Facebook and tweet that Morgan "just passed out" and turn on ABC right now to see it. It worked, with the message going viral and maybe even boosting the Emmy audience for a few moments.

Otherwise, Kimmel keep the show moving, with a few forgettable jokes greasing the skids.

Oh yeah ? he offered up a parody of the "In Memoriam" fixture that's a part of all awards shows. But this one was meant to salute someone still living, "to the life and work of someone everyone in this room admires, respects and loves."

The person, of course, was Kimmel, who was displayed in slow-motion video clips while Josh Groban sang a sonorous song.

Too bad Kimmel's best Emmycast moments were a practical joke and silly self-promotion.

? Frazier Moore ? http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

___

TIME FOR A NEW TATTOO

Damian Lewis was so over the moon at winning an Emmy that he says he's thinking of having "Emmy Winner" tattooed on, well, somewhere on the back of his body.

"I'm overwhelmed that I am here!" said the winner of the best actor award for a drama series for "Homeland."

When told backstage that he could have the trophy engraved with his name at the Governors Ball after the show, he contemplated complementing that with body art.

But first he had to sign for his award, and as he did couldn't hold his hands still.

"It's like my grandmother used to write ? all shaky," he said.

"Just tell me what to do," he continued. "I'm out of my mind."

? Sandy Cohen ? Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/apsandy .

___

OMG! KIMMEL HIJACKS TWITTER

So this is how time-wasting celebrity rumors get started.

Emmy host Jimmy Kimmel instructed people to go on Twitter and Facebook and write something along the lines of: "OMG, Tracy Morgan just passed out at the Emmys. Turn on ABC right now!" as a prank, just to see how quickly the information would spread (and inspire new viewers). Morgan, who was in on the gag, complied.

And, true to the pack mentality that develops instantaneously on social media, untold thousands of people actually did this. Many others simply read the words "Tracy Morgan" and "passed out" and thought Morgan truly had passed out.

Even Stephen Colbert (at)StephenatHome and Rosie O'Donnell (at)Rosie got in on the action, which prompted thousands more retweets.

Morgan was committed to the act, though: Not only did he lie down on stage, he actually stayed there through the commercial break and was hauled away, rambling to himself.

? Christy Lemire ? Twitter: https://twitter.com/christylemire

___

CRYER IS NOW TOP DOG

The changing of the guard is complete.

Jon Cryer truly was shocked to win an Emmy Sunday in his first outing as a nominee for lead actor in a comedy series.

That category used to belong to Cryer's former "Two and a Half Men" co-star Charlie Sheen. But with Sheen famously dumped from the CBS program, Cryer was elevated to top dog status.

"I will be impossible to live with," he quipped backstage after collecting his award. "I will be brandishing this regularly."

Cryer said he figured Jim Parsons of "The Big Bang Theory" would repeat as the winner.

"Clearly 'Big Bang' is just at the top of its game right now and unfortunately he's not gotten any worse," Cryer said. "I just did not think this was going to happen, so I apologize for my speech."

?Beth Harris ?Twitter http://twittter.com/bethharrisap

___

KAT'S CURVES

It's a happy fact of life for male viewers that "Mad Men" star Christina Hendricks and "Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara are, well, curvy.

And their curves were on ample display at Sunday's night Emmy telecast.

But the night's big surprise: Kat Dennings in a gown that exposed much of what had only been hinted at in her "2 Broke Girls" waitress uniform.

Her bustline had viewers' jaws dropping and tweeters madly tweeting.

? Frazier Moore ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

___

NO BOW TIE FOR KEVIN COSTNER

Kevin Costner went against the bow tie fashion trend at this year's Emmy Awards, sporting an open collar look that at least beat the searing heat on the red carpet.

The nominee for lead actor in a miniseries or movie for "Hatfields & McCoys" kept his arm around the waist of wife Christine Baumgartner as he arrived for the show. Asked to describe her gown, Costner said, "I can't wait to go home and close the door."

Stephen Colbert whipped out a blotting paper to make the sweat on his upper lip disappear before facing the throng of TV cameras.

Christine Baranski of "The Good Wife" shimmered under the relentless sunshine in a gold-and-silver sequined short dress. She eschewed a gown, saying she didn't want people stepping on it all night.

"I tried this on and it rocks," she said.

ZOOEY NAILS IT

Zooey Deschanel played up her "adorkable" persona on the Emmy red carpet with a quirky, sparkly manicure featuring television sets on her thumbnails.

The silver, gold and black accessories were a huge hit on Twitter.

A photo of an (at)ZooeyDeschanel digit was retweeted 964 times and favorite 1,135 times as of this writing. They were the work of nail technician Tom Bachik (at)RedCarpetMan.

Glamour Fashion called it "the mani we've been waiting for!" The "New Girl" star, who was a presenter Sunday night, is famous for her red-carpet nail numbers.

___

A MAD MAN MOMENT IN EMMY LOBBY

It was life imitating art just off to the side of the red carpet outside the Nokia Theatre entrance as "Mad Men" newbie Ben Feldman caught a smoke.

The resourceful first-time nominee discovered a corner tucked away from the scads of cameras and celebrities that was the perfect spot for a quick pre-show cigarette.

Unfortunately, there weren't any bottles of scotch nearby for him to wash it down with, but just inside the lobby of the Nokia Theatre attendees were lined up at the concession stand for $10 cocktails.

Feldman's "Mad Men" leading man Jon Hamm held court on the other side of the lobby, attracting a line of attendees who wanted a photo with the veteran nominee.

___

MOMS GOT THEIR DUE FROM THE RED CARPET

Moms weren't forgotten on the red carpet.

Rico Rodriguez, young star of "Modern Family," brought his mother as his date, presenting her to the world as "the beautiful ma-ma."

The pair were even featured in a prerecorded bit that tracked their progress in a limo from home to the Emmycast.

And earlier Stephen Colbert, while being interviewed with his wife at his side, took a moment to phone his 91-year-old mom on his cellphone to say hello.

"I've shouted at her 'We're on ABC!'" he told interviewer Josh Elliott.

? Frazier Moore ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

___

A RED CARPET PROPOSAL

One Emmy attendee used the red carpet for more than just walking ? he got down on one knee and proposed to his date.

Security initially tried to shoo him off, but saw him reaching into his pocket for a ring and let the moment happen. With throngs of people cheering, he presented the ring and received a kiss, and presumably an answer "Yes," as those nearby applauded the mystery couple.

? Anthony McCartney ? Twitter http://twittter.com/mccartneyA

___

FROM 1 JIMMY TO ANOTHER

Jimmy Fallon is playing musical chairs at this year's Emmy Awards, in more ways than one.

The 2010 Emmy host, interviewed on the red carpet, noted he has passed hosting duties on to another Jimmy this year, name of Kimmel.

As a result, Fallon said, he doesn't even have a ticket to the 2012 show.

"But Clint Eastwood said he was going to save me a chair," Fallon cracked.

His advice to this year's Jimmy: "Don't make out with Betty White. There's cameras everywhere and you'll get caught. And definitely go to Honey Boo Boo's after-party, cause that's gonna be where it's at."

? Frazier Moore ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/tvfrazier

____

SEEING STARS ON THE RED CARPET

At the Emmys there's the red carpet and then there's ? well ? the other red carpet.

As the main red carpet fills up, security tries to keep the line moving by directing the big stars down the carpet where cameras are lined up to film them and entertainment journalists are waiting to interview them.

Meantime, the less famous are directed down a parallel red carpet closer to the fan bleachers.

"Please continue walking," security guards continuously say.

Sometimes they'll also give a gentle nudge to someone on the B-list red carpet who lingers too long taking pictures of the folks on the A-List red carpet.

? Anthony McCartney ? Twitter http://twittter.com/mccartneyA

___

QUICKQUOTE: JESSE TYLER FERGUSON

"It's so warm I thought a nice flannel tux would be appropriate." ? Jesse Tyler Ferguson of "Modern Family" on the Emmy red carpet.

___

GETTING THE STARS' ATTENTION

"Jesse Jesse Jesse!" the crowd chants trying to get the attention of "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson. He obliges with several waves to the bleacher crowd.

Before the first stream of stars arrived on the Emmy Red Carpet, a show producer told them to "make everything personal" if they wanted to get their attention.

It may take several chants, but the stars often answer with a wave, a smile or the occasional fist pump.

? Anthony McCartney ?Twitter http://twittter.com/mccartneyAP

___

KEEPING COOL IN THE FAN BLEACHERS

Fran and Elmer Armstrong are awards show veterans, joining throngs of fans for at least their sixth Emmy Awards Show on a sweltering Sunday afternoon.

The retired St. Louis couple's quest for a front row seat in the fan bleachers beside the red carpet began when they lined up outside the Nokia Theatre around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. As the day progressed, and temperatures rose, they hung in there, cheering as the cameras from E! Entertainment television filmed pre-show segments.

"Goodbye Giuliana," 70-year-old Elmer Armstrong shouted to anchor Giuliana Rancic as the E Entertainment crew wrapped up.

With temperatures topping 90 degrees, he and his 71-year-old wife were like many in the stands ? trying to keep cool with water and wet paper towels. At least this year's stands are shaded. Elmer Armstrong recalled one year when fans were forced to sit in the blazing sun.

That's not the only change to this year's fan seating ? a tall wall keeps fans from glad-handing or even getting autographs from cooperative celebrities.

Elmer Armstrong remains at the ready, however ? keeping his digital SLR camera and telephoto lens handy to get shots of the stars.

Red king or red queen: In relationships based on mutuality, number of individuals involved can determine rate at which species evolve

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? The relationship between species determines how rapidly they evolve. Parasites and their hosts coevolve more rapidly, and partners in a mutualistic relationship can evolve more slowly. But this view is obviously too simplistic. The rate of evolution in a mutualistic relationship does not depend only on the type of interactions, but also on the number of individuals involved, according to a model developed by researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Pl?n, Germany. Therefore, while partners can benefit from slow evolution if only two individuals interact, a higher rate of evolution may be favoured if several individuals are involved.

Parasites and hosts conduct an arms race with one another in which the parasite must constantly find new ways to circumvent the defensive measures of the host. As a result, they both constantly evolve. This is similar to the situation of the Red Queen in the book ?Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There? by British author Lewis Carroll, and is therefore labelled the Red Queen Hypothesis.

The counterpart to it is the Red King?s Hypothesis, first posited in 2003: in mutualistic relationships, evolving more slowly can be favoured. This occurs, namely, when the partners behave egotistically in the beginning and then attempt to become more altruistic. The partner holding back and evolving more slowly benefits, as it does not have to invest anything in improving the partnership.

Up to now, researchers have explored the Red King Hypothesis only in models for which two individuals come into contact with one another. However, this does not reflect reality for the most part. It is much more often the case in nature that several individuals are in a relationship with one another. Thus, several ants protect a single butterfly larva in order to be rewarded with its honeydew. For the ant, the relationship is therefore between two individuals; however, from the perspective of the caterpillar, there are multiple partners interacting.

The scientists in Pl?n have therefore tested the Red King?s Hypothesis in a multiplayer model. According to this, it was confirmed that the Red King?s Hypothesis is only valid in pairwise mutualistic relationships. As soon as several parties are involved, it becomes considerably more complicated. ?Then more rapid evolution can be favoured for a party as well,? explains Chaitanya Gokhale from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology.

NFL labor dispute: Players, owners should learn from baseball

Opportunities to avert disaster don't come often. Right now, the NFL and its union, by agreeing to a 24-hour extension of their collective bargaining agreement, have taken a step back from the edge. Let's hope it is progress, not just gamesmanship.

As NFL owners and their players find themselves at the first of what may be many brinks in their negotiations, they should learn from baseball's horrid battle of 1994-95. That dispute cascaded into failure, in part because both sides thought they'd win before anything awful happened.

In baseball, as in the current NFL ruckus, the owners spent years laying the groundwork to roll back gains made by the players. In both cases, the players felt sure that labor law was on their side. The owners felt they were getting squeezed and had the financial muscle to change that balance. Both sports were enjoying boom times. That cushion of overconfidence, plus so much money to be split up, proved a perfect prescription for a brawl.

Baseball set deadlines, extended them, then let them pass. Both sides postured, pretended to be negotiating seriously while actually playing for advantage with the public and in the media. There were many baseball days back then that felt a lot like Thursday's NFL talks. Marathon meetings, new last-minute proposals: There's progress! Don't fret.

Yet the 1994 World Series was lost; the aftershocks are still shaking the sport today. Reflect on this cautionary tale, lords of football and players, too.

And reach a deal fast, even if it's far sooner than your original battle plan.

At the moment, both sides are acting serious, but is there really any sense of urgency? The owners have been planning their strategy since 2008, when they reopened the CBA two years early. Aren't they tempted to see how their brilliant strategies will play out? Baseball's owners sure were.

As for players, you already hear quotes about, "Oh, no games until September." When they get their first paychecks. Who cares about missing OTAs? I've covered 10 sports labor battles for The Washington Post, including two NFL lockouts in the 1980s. Ignore history if you want. But the longer you wait, the harder to deal, the easier to go to the mattresses.

There's another side of the coin: our side. Fans of the NFL, even the most ardent, should also learn something from baseball's misery: Don't care. Or care as little as you can. Don't live and die with the latest twist in talks. If the current 24-hour extension leads to progress, that's great. But if this moment of hope leads to nothing, be prepared to mock both sides and, when you can, try to laugh. That's the only pleasure we're going to get.

Because there is one certainty when labor fights get this intense: Neither side cares about you. If you pick a favorite and scream your opinion, then you're probably the sucker. The owners will only listen to those who back them. The same goes for the players.

The sound that really worries them is silence. Try to provide it.

Perhaps the scariest parallel between baseball then and football now is the idea that the healthier the sport, the less likely a disaster. That's backward. Lots of money on the table brings out the worst in people, seldom the best.

PFT: Ravens' Smith suffers family tragedy

Tony RomoAP

Every week, the research staff at Football Night In America puts together extensive notes and research for every game.? Every Sunday morning (ideally), I review those notes.? Carefully (ideally).

In order to ensure that I review the notes, I?ll try (ideally) to post one intriguing fact per game, every Sunday morning.

Rams at Bears:? Michael Bush has had 25 or more carries five times in his career.? His team has never lost when that?s happened, and he has rushed for 684 yards in those five games combined.

Bill at Browns:? Trent Richardson became the first rookie to run for more than 100 yards and score a rushing and receiving touchdown since Samkon Gado in 2005.

Bucs at Cowboys:? Tony Romo has never lost to Tampa, winning all three times he has faced them.? In those three games combined, Romo has thrown 11 touchdown passes, zero interceptions, and has generated a passer rating of 144.8.

Jaguars at Colts:? With his next rushing touchdown, Maurice Jones-Drew will become the all-time leader in franchise history.? He?s currently tied with Fred Taylor at 62.

Jets at Dolphins:? Reggie Bush, who has a 6.8-yard rushing average against the Jets, has three straight 100-yard rushing games at home.

49ers at Vikings:? Move over Joe Montana and Steve Young.? Alex Smith has thrown 216 passes without an interception, a franchise record.

Chiefs at Saints:? Lost in the Saints? 0-2 start is the fact that Drew Brees is now only two games behind matching John Unitas with a touchdown pass in 47 straight games.

Lions at Titans:? Matthew Stafford has 2,504 passing yards since December 2011, most in the league.

Bengals at Redskins:? Since 2005, only Devin Hester has more punt-return touchdowns than Adam Jones.? (Making Hester?s total more impressive is the fact that he didn?t enter the NFL until 2006.)

Eagles at Cardinals:? Darnell Dockett has 28.5 sacks since 2007, the most of any defensive tackle in the league.

Falcons at Chargers:? Philip Rivers is 200 passing yards away from 25,000 for his career.

Texans at Broncos:? The Texans are the only team to start each of the last three seasons 2-0, but the Broncos are 2-0 at home all-time against the Texans.

Steelers at Raiders:? Darren McFadden has 15 receptions so far this season, tying him with Reggie Wayne for the AFC lead.

Patriots at Ravens:? With 21 passing yards, Tom Brady will pass his boyhood idol, Joe Montana, who had 40,551 in his career.

Packers at Seahawks:? Marshawn Lynch has rushed for more than 100 yards at home in six straight games, with 712 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

Obama gaining in battleground state contributions

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Showing impressive momentum, President Barack Obama raised more in high-dollar contributions than Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney during the last two months in 10 of 11 battleground states that are pivotal to win the presidential election, according to an analysis of new campaign financial reports by The Associated Press.

Importantly, Romney's campaign has raised more money from donors who gave over $200 than Obama's organization overall since May in four of those 11 battleground states ? in some cases by wide margins, such as $21 million for Romney in Florida versus $11.2 million there for Obama. And nationally, Romney has continued to out-fundraise Obama.

Yet Obama made especially impressive gains last month in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The new financial figures, current through the end of August, do not reflect a slam dunk for Obama's campaign. But as much as the act of donating more than $200 to a politician is a measure of popular support, the figures present another challenge for Romney in key states with only six weeks before Election Day.

They also represent a precursor to what has been one of the most difficult periods in Romney's candidacy. Romney has struggled this week to quell controversy over a secretly recorded video in which he told donors that 47 percent of the country pays no taxes and is dependent on government, amid fresh signs of a national housing rebound and growing support for Obama in public opinion polls.

For example, in Florida, with its 29 winner-take-all electoral votes, Obama raised $5.5 million in itemized contributions in July and August compared to $3.7 million for Romney during the same period. In Ohio, with 18 electoral votes and also considered a keystone for a winning campaign, Obama raised $2.3 million compared to $1.3 million for Romney, during the same period.

The AP's analysis doesn't include the tens of millions of dollars in advertisements from super political action committees and doesn't include details about donors who gave fewer than $200 because they aren't required to be listed on the federal reports.

"The president's picking up traction in battleground states he carried before," said R. Donahue Peebles, a major Obama fundraiser in New York. "As the election nears, people are paying more attention. The donors who had been sitting on the sidelines are now getting involved and are more engaged."

Obama four years ago broke presidential fundraising records but has found himself financially outgunned for much of the summer, thanks in part to super PACs supporting Romney. Those groups have been largely bankrolled by wealthy Americans and have flourished under recent legal changes that loosened campaign-finance regulations. Obama has similar groups working in his favor, although not as successfully.

Obama's campaign pulled in $114 million in August, slightly more than Romney's $111.6 million. Unlike Obama, Romney raised more than $100 million nationwide for at least three consecutive months this summer.

Romney and the Republican Party had $168.5 million cash on hand versus Obama and the Democrats' $125 million left in the bank. Romney also took out a $20 million loan on Aug. 22; he had repaid at least $5 million of that by the end of August, reports show.

For Obama, pulling ahead of Romney hasn't been easy, particularly for a campaign that has repeatedly and publicly acknowledged it will be outspent. Romney showed remarkable successes in some battleground states earlier this year. He raised $7.6 million in Florida in May, compared to $1.5 million for Obama; Romney raised $3.7 million in Ohio in June compared to $545,000 for Obama.

In Virginia, which broke tradition in 2008 and awarded its 13 electoral votes to Obama, Obama out-raised Romney by roughly 2-to-1 during the last two months. Romney had raised more in Virginia than Obama during the preceding May and June.

The new financial reports also showed that some wealthy executives who have given tens of millions of dollars to super PACs this election didn't give any more money last month, including Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson and Texas businessman Harold Simmons. Some major donors have chosen to give instead to super PACs' nonprofit arms, which don't have to reveal their donors but must focus their ads on political issues.

Obama to Latinos: Romney ?uncertain? about immigration reform plans

(Carolyn Kaster/AP)President Barack Obama, under tough questioning at a Univision-hosted forum in Miami on Thursday, defended his failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform during his first term in office.

"My first priority was making sure that we prevented us from going into a Great Depression," Obama said?after Univision host Jorge Ramos bluntly told the president he had failed to keep his promise to pass immigration reform.

"I did not make a promise that I would get everything done, 100 percent," Obama said, adding that the issue remains a "top priority" for his administration.

The president also took a shot at GOP rival Mitt Romney's suggestion that Obama supporters?which Romney estimated to be 47 percent of the country?have a "victim" mentality and are reliant on government handouts.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is, maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," Obama said, describing Americans as some of "the hardest-working people there are." "People want a hand up, not a handout."

Obama's comments came a day after Romney participated in the first of the Spanish-language network's two forums. The Republican presidential nominee had also come under tough questioning about his immigration policies.

Obama additionally cast blame on congressional Republicans, saying he was "na?ve" to think the opposing party would work with him on the issue. He told Univision he was not "all powerful" and simply didn't have the votes to pass the bill without the support of GOP lawmakers.

"One of my first acts was to invite every single member of Congress who had previously been supportive comprehensive immigration reform to the White House and say to them, 'We need to get this done,'" Obama said. "What I confess I did not expect... is that Republicans who had previously supported comprehensive immigration reform ? suddenly would walk away."

Obama also insisted that his executive action earlier this year that allows young immigrants brought into the country illegally by their parents to obtain work visas without fear of deportation was not politically motivated, as Romney has suggested.

"I was winning the Latino vote before we took that action," Obama said, acknowledging polls that show him leading Romney among Hispanic voters by more than 40 points. And Romney, he said, who has criticized Obama for failing to deliver on immigration reform, is?"uncertain about what his plan for immigration reform would be."

Obama added that "the issue here for voters is whose vision best represents the aspirations not just of the Latino community, but of all Americans who believe that we are a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants. And that candidate I believe is talking to you right now."

Tigers top A's

By LARRY LAGE

updated 10:25 p.m. ET Sept. 19, 2012

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit manager Jim Leyland had his head on a swivel, looking at reporters when they asked a question one moment and glancing up toward the TV in his office with Kansas City leading Chicago when it got quiet.

"If I didn't have this on, I might as well go home," Leyland said.

The Tigers improved their chances of sticking around beyond the regular season when Miguel Cabrera homered, Omar Infante drove in three runs and Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings to help them beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Wednesday night.

The Royals later helped out with a 3-0 win over the White Sox that trimmed their lead to two games over Detroit in the AL Central with 14 games remaining.

The Tigers have won two straight over the A's - and 28 of their last 36 games at home.

"We played a couple good games against one of the hottest teams in all of baseball," Leyland said. "That's pretty good."

Oakland, clinging to an AL wild-card spot, has dropped three straight and might have had a costly loss on the mound because Brett Anderson (4-2) left the game after two-plus innings with a strained right oblique.

"He's getting an MRI right now," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "So, we won't know anything until he gets back."

Melvin plans to pitch Dan Strally in Anderson's spot in the rotation if he can't make his next start.

The A's forced Justin Verlander (15-8) to throw 122 pitches and that ended his night. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five.

"It was a grind," Verlander said.

Octavio Dotel struck out two in a perfect seventh. Joaquin Benoit had two strikeouts in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game in a non-save situation, entering with a six-run lead, and was booed after giving up two-out RBI singles to Cliff Pennington and Stephen Drew.

Detroit played some small ball to take a 3-0 lead in the third.

Andy Dirks and Gerald Laird started the inning with bunt singles and advanced on Austin Jackson's groundout. Infante followed with a double down the left-field line to put the Tigers up 2-0.

"Those were two perfect bunts or they would have been outs," Melvin said.

Infante's groundout in the eighth inning gave the Tigers a six-run lead.

After walking Cabrera intentionally and giving Prince Fielder a free pass on four pitches to load the bases, Anderson was injured while pitching to Delmon Young. Anderson fell forward and landed awkwardly after throwing his 48th pitch. Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta and Melvin talked with Anderson briefly on the field before deciding to take him out of the game.

"We could see earlier in the inning that he was trying to stretch out his back, so I don't think the fall had anything to do with it," Melvin said. "We just checked him at that point and decided we didn't want to go any farther with him."

Right-hander Pat Neshek replaced Anderson and Young promptly hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta had an error in the fifth - snapping a 75-game errorless streak - but he helped turn a double play to end the inning. He chipped in at the plate in the home half, hitting an RBI single to put Detroit ahead 4-0.

Cabrera sent Jim Miller's 94 mph high fastball on an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for his 41st home run and 130th RBI to bolster his shot at being baseball's first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the feat in 1967.

"It's something that is a dream," Cabrera said. "But right now, I got to focus on trying to help us make the playoffs."

Verlander said it has been "unbelievable," to watch Cabrera this season.

"Obviously, he's got my support for MVP," the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young award winner. "He's one home run away from the Triple Crown, and that's a rarity in baseball, and that's a testament to how good of a player he is.

"Look at the ball he hit for a home run. We were talking about that, you just don't see that. You execute your pitch, 94 up at his chin, and he hits a home run.

NOTES: Tigers RHP Max Scherzer hopes to make his next scheduled start on Sunday at home against Minnesota. He left the series opener against Oakland after just two innings because of a fatigued right shoulder. "It wasn't sharp pain, it was weakness," he said. "I need a couple days of not throwing." ... A's OF Coco Crisp didn't play because of infections in both eyes and Melvin is hoping his contagious ailment doesn't spread. "He's got his own towels," Melvin said. ... Tigers C Alex Avila, still feeling the effects of colliding with Fielder on Sunday, didn't play and the team is hoping he'll return this weekend at home against the Twins. ... Peralta's 75-game scoreless streak was the longest by a position player for the Tigers in a season since at least 1957.

Rangers increase AL West lead to 4

By GREG BEACHAM

updated 1:06 a.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Michael Young thinks the Texas Rangers have done more than enough winning over the past few Septembers to know how to pay attention to what's happening on the scoreboard and in their own game.

The Rangers got great news in both areas Wednesday night.

Derek Holland pitched seven innings of six-hit ball, Geovany Soto hit a late two-run homer and Texas hurt the Los Angeles Angels' wild-card chances with a 6-2 victory.

One night after the Angels scored 11 runs without Albert Pujols, the Rangers dominated offensively and improved the AL's best record to 88-60 without sluggers Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre, who sat with injuries. Texas also moved 7 1/2 games ahead of Los Angeles - and four ahead of second-place Oakland (84-64) in the AL West standings with the Athletics' loss at Detroit.

"Of course we look at the scoreboard," said Young, who has an eight-game hitting streak. "It's that time of year. I'm a baseball fan. You can do both, though. Obviously, what we do on the field trumps scoreboard-watching, but you can be aware of what's going on."

Young, Elvis Andrus and Mike Napoli had run-scoring extra-base hits in the third inning as the Rangers chased former teammate C.J. Wilson, who flopped in his second-shortest start for Los Angeles.

Hamilton, the majors' leader with 42 homers, sat out with a recurring sinus condition that affects his vision, while Beltre had abdominal trouble. Hamilton and Beltre both had MRI exams, but the results won't be available until Thursday.

But Soto homered and Nelson Cruz had an RBI double in a three-run eighth for the majors' most potent offense.

Holland (11-6) struck out four and walked just one batter to remain unbeaten since July 31 while getting his first victory of the season over the Angels. Working in harmony with Soto, the catcher with a curious habit of singing to his pitcher, Holland went at least seven innings for the fourth straight start.

"We didn't have Hamilton, we didn't have Beltre, but I knew if I made my pitches, the other guys would make plays for me," Holland said. "I'm really happy with my teammates. They've been carrying us, and now I feel like I've got to step up."

Alberto Callaspo hit a two-run homer for the Angels (81-68), who had won 15 of 20. Wilson and his teammates blew a chance to pull within 2 1/2 games of the slumping A's for the second AL wild-card slot, instead sitting 3 1/2 back with 13 games to go.

"You can make it whatever you want to," said Mark Trumbo, who went 0 for 3. "I mean, if you treat it like a dire situation, I doubt that's going to do too much good for us. We're actually pretty loose right now, and I think that's the right way to go about it, as opposed to stressing out and trying to do too much."

Wilson (12-10) went winless in five starts this season against the Rangers after leaving Texas to sign a $77.5 million deal with his hometown team last December. He walked the bases loaded in the first inning and gave up three runs on four hits in the third, forcing Angels manager Mike Scioscia to pull him early for Jerome Williams.

"I wasn't happy to get pulled out of the game, but I wasn't doing well, either," Wilson said. "So it's my own fault. We're trying to win the game, so I understand. ... You've seen their lineup, right? They have a lot of good hitters, not just two guys. Everybody can drive in runs on that team and everybody can go deep."

The high-priced left-hander had pitched at least three innings in every outing for Los Angeles except his first start of the season against Texas, when he didn't return after a nearly two-hour rain delay.

"We know C.J. knows that we are a very aggressive bunch of guys," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "Tonight, we waited and made him throw the ball in the strike zone, and it worked for us."

Williams yielded one hit over 4 1-3 innings of excellent relief.

Pujols went 2 for 4, but made two significant mental blunders in his return to the Angels after missing Tuesday's game to be with his wife, who delivered their fifth child Sunday morning.

Pujols hit a long single in the sixth, but got thrown out by 15 feet foolishly trying to stretch it into a double - a decision made even worse when Torii Hunter doubled immediately afterward. Pujols then dived in front of second baseman Howie Kendrick to field a routine grounder in the eighth, allowing Young to reach base and eventually score.

NOTES: Texas reliever Mike Adams pitched the eighth in his first action since sitting out the past week with right shoulder soreness. ... Mike Trout set yet another Angels rookie record when he led off the first inning with a single, surpassing Devon White's 283 total bases in 1987. ... Trumbo extended his horrendous slump extended to 27 for 158 (.171) with 67 strikeouts over his past 40 games.... An MRI on Texas RHP Tanner Scheppers' right knee revealed no structural damage. The Orange County native was hurt while covering home plate Tuesday night when Chris Iannetta scored on his wild pitch.

Regime airstrikes on gas station kill at least 30 people in northern Syria, activists say

BEIRUT - Regime airstrikes hit a gas station in northern Syria Thursday, setting off a fiery explosion that killed at least 30 people and wounded dozens, opposition activists said. Amateur video showed thick black smoke engulfing the scene.

Earlier Thursday, a Syrian military helicopter crashed near the capital of Damascus, and Syria's Information Ministry said the helicopter went down after its rotor accidentally clipped the tail of a Syrian passenger plane with 200 people on board. The larger aircraft landed safely at Damascus International Airport and no one was hurt, the ministry said.

The airstrikes and the close call in the sky underscored the growing turmoil and violence in Syria. The country is embroiled in a civil war between forces fighting for President Bashar Assad and those trying to topple him. More than 23,000 people have been killed in the 18-month conflict, according to activists.

In recent weeks, Assad's regime has stepped up airstrikes in northern Syria in an attempt to dislodge rebels from areas they control there. Activists said Thursday's air attack hit near the town of Ain Issa, about 25 miles (40 kilometres) from Turkey. A day earlier, rebel fighters had seized control of a border crossing north of the town.

Rami Abdul-Rahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said that witnesses counted at least 30 bodies and that dozens of people were wounded. Another group, the Local Coordination Committees, which gathers information from a network of activists across Syria, put the death toll at 55.

Amateur video showed thick black smoke rising near the gas station, which was partially intact. Several vehicles, including a bulldozer and pickup trucks, were on fire. The video, whose authenticity could not be confirmed independently, also showed several damaged cars. A man could be heard shouting "your son is dead."

Both groups quoted witnesses as saying the blast was caused by airstrikes on the gas station.

The Syrian conflict appears to have reached a stalemate. The rebels are holding some territory despite the government's military superiority but have been unable to score decisive victories. At the same time, the international community is averse to getting involved militarily and instead hopes economic sanctions will squeeze the Assad regime.

Meanwhile, the fighting continues.

Across Syria, at least 184 people were killed Thursday, the LCC said, reporting 35 dead in Aleppo, Syria's largest city, and 32 in Damascus and its suburbs. The Observatory put the day's total across Syria at 162. August has been the deadliest month so far in the Syria conflict, with activists saying nearly 5,000 were killed.

The crash near Damascus came after the rotor of a military helicopter clipped the tail of a Syrian Arab Airlines jet, the state-run news agency SANA quoted Syria's Information Ministry as saying. This seemed to counter speculation that anti-regime fighters might have downed the helicopter.

Rebels in Syria are fighting mostly with light weapons. Opposition fighters have claimed to have shot down helicopters and warplanes in the past, although the regime blamed most of the problems on mechanical difficulties.

Syrian officials did not report any casualties in the helicopter crash, saying only that it went down in Adra, a Damascus suburb. Adra is near the Douma district, which has witnessed repeated military crackdowns to purge the rebels.

"We heard the sound of several explosions and some gunfire, and a few minutes later, we were told that a helicopter had crashed," Mohammad Saeed, an activist in Douma, said via Skype. He said the helicopter went down near a factory for household items, adding that Syrian MiG warplanes and helicopter gunships had been flying low over the area before the crash.

On the diplomatic front, a coalition including the United States, the European Union and the Arab League met in the Netherlands to search for new ways of isolating the Assad regime. The group called "Friends of the Syrian People" was set up in February after the U.N. Security Council was unable to agree on a resolution condemning Syria's government, due to opposition from Russia and China.

Financial experts joined representatives of the group at their meeting in The Hague to help member countries understand how Syria may be using dual-use technologies and front companies to get around the existing sanctions, which include an embargo on oil and arms trade with Syria by participating nations.

Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal said the sanctions are having an effect, despite non-participation by Russia, China and Iran, citing a sharp fall in Syria's oil exports. Syrian opposition leaders have warned that sanctions alone will not topple Assad.

Shelling and gunfire also echoed across the northern border region with Turkey, a day after rebels seized control of the strategic Tel Abyad border crossing there. The Observatory reported renewed fighting near the crossing. Tel Abyad is about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of where the gas station was struck Thursday.

In Akcakale, a Turkish hamlet that straddles the border, a large explosion was heard. In the distance in Syria, military vehicles were seen rushing toward the blast scene as smoke billowed from the area.

Akcakale authorities closed local schools for a second straight day.

Turkish police vehicles escorted reporters covering the events in Syria away from the border. Turkish security forces were also seen moving local residents and cordoning off the area closest to Syria.

Residents of Akcakale said they fear for their safety.

"We're pretty scared. I'm not letting my children out of the house. I've sent them (the children) to another village, 5-10 kilometres from here," said resident Mehmet Resat Guvenic. "We're afraid because this is the first time we're hearing gunfire, and bombings, and shelling."

S&P cuts Washington Post rating by 1 notch

NEW YORK (AP) ? Standard & Poor's cut the credit rating of the Washington Post Co. to "BBB" on Thursday, citing deteriorating performance at its Kaplan education unit and continuing declines in newspaper advertising revenue.

S&P said the outlook for the rating is "negative," and noted that the company faces risks in stabilizing both its businesses.

The ratings agency said the company has experienced "sharply negative" trends in student enrollment and profitability since 2010 as a result of regulations that restrict its ability to market its services.

The company is also trying to revise the way it does business to reduce student loan default rates, which have contributed to lower enrollment the at the Kaplan test preparation and distance learning unit.

At "BBB", the company's long-term rating is one notch below the previous "BBB+" rating. It is two notches above junk bond status.

Last month, the Washington Post reported second-quarter net income rose 14 percent to $51.8 million, or $6.84 per share, while revenue fell 5 percent to $1 billion.

Washington Post shares were down $2.49, or less than 1 percent, at $360.68 in late trading Thursday. Shares have traded in a range between $308.50 and $405 in the last year.

Goal is to select novel clinical development candidates to help stop the global pandemic

PARIS AND NEW YORK, September 20, 2012 - Sanofi (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) and the Global Alliance for TB Drug Development (TB Alliance) announced today a new research collaboration agreement to accelerate the discovery and development of novel compounds against tuberculosis (TB), a deadly infectious disease that resulted in almost 1.5 million deaths worldwide1 in 2010.

Under the agreement, Sanofi and TB Alliance will collaborate to further optimize and develop several novel compounds in Sanofi's library that have demonstrated activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB. This includes in-depth research of lead compounds based upon identified chemical derivatives of natural products, which have promising potential to treat all forms of TB, and the chemical optimization of other series of compounds that have been identified as "hits" through high-throughput screening.

"Sanofi's long-standing commitment to delivering treatments for people living with tuberculosisincluding the discovery of rifampicin, the gold-standard drug for tuberculosis treatment, as well as the manufacture of TB treatmentscontinues with this collaboration," said Elias Zerhouni, M.D., President, Global R&D, Sanofi. "By continuing our excellent partnership with the TB Alliance and leveraging our joint resources, we hope to find together new options to fight this dreaded global disease."

"In working with Sanofi, we seek a common goalto give patients and physicians significantly more effective treatments for TB and drug-resistant TB," said Mel Spigelman, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, TB Alliance. "Without new regimens, we cannot stop this global pandemic."

In 2010, TB affected nearly 9 million people2 globally. The cost of diagnosing and treating these cases between 2009 and 2015 was estimated at U.S. $16.9 billion, with annual costs increasing from $700 million in 2009 to $4.4 billion in 2015.3 Current TB treatments require patients to take multiple antibiotics for six to 24 months or longer4, a treatment that is difficult for many patients to complete, leading to noncompliance. Noncompliance can result in the development of drug-resistant strains, such as multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) or extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB), or death.5 In fact, a recent Lancet study led by Tracy Dalton from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates XDR-TB has been reported in 77 countries worldwide and MDR-TB and XDR-TB are both at higher levels than previously estimated.6 The health consequences of TB and reported increases in MDR-TB and XDR-TB, along with increasing treatment costs, underscore the urgent need for new, better, faster-acting treatments.
